The Stores

Ever wondered what it’s like behind the scenes at a museum?

Find out when you visit The Stores! Use the artefact and archive collections to research, investigate and explore the railways of the past.

Engage with the museum’s collections and archive and delve into the history of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. Discover objects and artefacts relating to the development and operation of railways in North East England.

We have what is said to be the finest collection of crested china in the country. Before the First World War, the country was nuts about collecting small china souvenirs displaying a town’s coat-of-arms, and we have many pieces with Darlington’s emblem on them.

Alongside fine-china, you'll find 30,000 railway heritage artefacts on permanent display in The Stores including model locomotives, name plates, signage, furniture, clothing and many more important pieces of history.

Opening soon is the research and study area. Known as Study At The Stores, researchers, students and heritage enthusiasts can access our historical railway records and archives by appointment only.

The Space (within The Stores) is an area specially designed for community exhibitions exploring Darlington and the town’s railway heritage.

There's also a reading corner in The Stores for you to sit and discover more about local railway heritage.

The Stores in the Carriage Works is sponsored by Bussey & Armstrong.
