Self-guided visit

Explore Hopetown Darlington for as long or short a time as you want. With three early railway heritage buildings and one new build to explore, there's lots to see and do in the north of England's newest visitor attraction.

North Road Station Museum Tour

Include a tour of the Grade II* listed North Road Station Museum for your group to see our historic locomotives and heritage railway collection on display, and marvel at the technology used to tell the story of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.

Family History Workshop - coming soon!

In this two-hour workshop, our Collections Engagement Manager will guide you through family history resources of local railway works. Perhaps you'll find a railway relative or friend!

A group visit to Hopetown Darlington is a party that consists of 10 or more people.

  • Max. group size for self led visits- No max. limit
  • Max. group size for tours of North Road Station Museum - 50 people
  • Max. group size for the Family History workshop - 20 people

Admission to Hopetown Darlington is free so there is no charge for self-guided visits.


Tours of North Road Station Museum are discounted for groups visits.

Coach drop off is on Station Road directly outside Hopetown Darlington. There is no coach parking on site. The nearest coach parking is on Chesnut Street, a 9 minute walk away.

Coach drivers receive a voucher for free refreshments in Clocktower Café.

Why not travel to us by train instead? We share a site with North Road Railway Station!

All group visits must be booked in advance where possible.

Pre-booked groups will be greeted at the Goods Shed main entrance.

Site admission is free. Free site admission includes entry to North Road Station Museum, Darlington Locomotive Works viewing gallery and The Stores, as well as the shop, café and outdoor areas. Some exhibitions, events and activities carry a separate charge. For these, a separate ticket is required, in addition to a free site admission ticket. This includes the Wagon Woods adventure play park and Experiment! the immersive experience ride.
