Railway Coffee Morning Turns 10!

A Decade of Coffee, Conversation and Community

On Thursday 30th April 2026 - beneath towering locomotive, and surrounded by the familiar smells and sounds of a working railway site, the Railway Coffee Morning Group came together to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

There was cake, of course. Plenty of conversation. And most importantly, a room full of people who have shared not just a love of railways, but ten years of friendship, laughter and connection.

The celebration took place at the newly opened Darlington Locomotive Works, an atmospheric setting that felt especially fitting. Nearby stood two powerful symbols of Darlington’s railway story: Tornado, the world famous steam locomotive built right here in Darlington, and Prince of Wales, the UK’s newest steam locomotive still under construction. Past, present and future all in one place, just like the group itself.

The group was the brainchild of Alison Grange, who is now Hopetown Darlington's Collections and Engagement Manager.

When the Railway Coffee Morning Group first began a decade ago in the former Head of Steam Darlington Railway Museum, Alison's idea was wonderfully simple: open the doors, put the kettle on and give former railway workers and their families a welcoming place to meet. What followed was something much deeper.

Meeting once a month, the group quickly became a space where stories flowed easily - tales of North Road Works, long shifts, friendships formed on the job and lives shaped by the railway. Over the years, members have travelled together on day trips to other attractions like the National Railway Museum and Locomotion, and even kept meeting throughout Hopetown’s redevelopment in 2023/2024, gathering faithfully at Morrisons North Road Café to keep the tradition alive.

“The group stands out for its informal, inclusive and heritage‑led approach that has become a crucial community lifeline to battle loneliness in the older generation of former railway workers.” explains Alison. “When we started the Railway Coffee Morning Group ten years ago, the idea was simply to open the doors, put the kettle on and give people a space where they felt comfortable talking. What’s grown from that has been incredibly special.

"This isn’t just about railways, although that shared history brings people together - it’s about connection, wellbeing and belonging. For many of our members, this monthly gathering has become a real anchor. Seeing everyone together today, sharing stories beneath these locomotives, has been a deeply moving reminder of why Hopetown and the Coffee Morning matters and why community spaces like this are so important.”

The anniversary celebration felt much like the group itself: informal, inclusive and deeply human. Guests enjoyed a small pop up exhibition drawn from Hopetown’s collections, exploring Darlington’s locomotive building heritage through photographs and objects that sparked recognition and conversation.

There were smiles and laughter, but also quiet moments. Members remembered friends who are no longer with them and reflected on how much the group has meant over the years.

Les, one of the original members, summed it up beautifully: “I started coming along years ago for a cuppa and a chat, but it quickly became much more than that. This group keeps you connected to each other and to the railway history we’re all so proud of, allows you to make genuine friends and to reminisce about the good old days in North Road Works. It gives you something to look forward to every month, and that means a lot.”

The Railway Coffee Morning Group is just one example of what Hopetown Darlington is all about. It’s a place where history isn’t locked behind glass - it’s lived, shared and passed on through conversation, community and care.

As the group marked ten years together, surrounded by locomotives old and new, the message was clear: heritage spaces matter because people matter.
