A Textile Tribute To A Pioneer
Locomotion No.1 Triptych
Created by the members of Darlington Stitch and Create (2023–2025)
The Locomotion No.1 Triptych is a vibrant collaborative textile artwork inspired by Locomotion No.1, the pioneering steam locomotive built by George and Robert Stephenson for the Stockton & Darlington Railway. Conceived and crafted by members of Darlington Stitch and Create, this project began in December 2023 and reached completion in July 2025.
Each of the three panels reimagines the iconic engine through a rich variety of textile techniques—reflecting the creativity and skill of participants ranging from enthusiastic beginners to accomplished textile artists.
The backgrounds feature intricate patchwork and slow stitching, while the railway tracks are formed from space-dyed and tie-dyed fabrics, fused into strips and delicately embellished with detailed stitching. The billowing steam emerges from textured Suffolk puffs and scrunched fabric, while the engine and wagons are constructed from woven ribbons and fabric strips, creating depth and movement.
The bunting showcases traditional goldwork, tapestry, and hand embroidery, while the Robert Stephenson cameos demonstrate exceptional finesse in fine embroidery.
To ensure full inclusivity, each element was made available as a stitching kit, allowing members to choose components that matched their experience level—offering both accessibility and the chance to learn new creative techniques.
The Locomotion No.1 Triptych stands as a testament to Darlington’s enduring spirit of innovation and collaboration, celebrating both its engineering heritage and the artistry of its community.
You can see the Triptych in The Stores at Hopetown Darlington from Saturday 18 October 2025.
