Class 37 Diesel Locomotive (D6898)

Meet the British Rail Class 37

The Class 37 locomotive D6898 is the very last locomotive to be built at Darlington's Stephenson Works between 1962 - 1964.

Stephenson works was a locomotive building facility in Darlington. The Works built a wide variety of locos for home and abroad, the last ones being diesel electrics of Class 37.

After rolling out of Stephenson's Works, the locomotive worked across the British Rail network until around 1999. It was placed in storage until 2004 when it was reactivated for the heritage railway sector.

In 2008, the locomotive was purchased by Network Rail and was used for parts for other class 37s. Network Rail donated the locomotive to the former Head of Steam Darlington Railway Museum in 2021. It is the first time Network Rail have ever donated an entire locomotive to any museum.

The locomotive has undergone a complete aesthetic refurbishment including all paintwork and livery, now looking brand new like it did when it left in April 1964.
