British Empire Medal (BEM) Honour
Congratulations to our colleague Richard Starrs (Richie) on being awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King’s Birthday Honours.
Richie, who was the project manager for the Stockton & Darlington Railway Bicentenary - and who is now a proud member of the Hopetown team - has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to rail heritage and his leadership in delivering the S&DR200 anniversary celebrations in 2025.
Reflecting on the award, Richie said: “I am really, really proud and honoured to have been recognised. It has been wonderful to be a part of, and I am incredibly proud of what we have all achieved. I am just a small cog in the wheel of a broader partnership that has delivered so much. Special thanks go to the Friends of Stockton & Darlington Railway, Darlington Borough Council, Durham County Council and Stockton Borough Council, as well as Historic England, Tees Valley Combined Authority and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. All have been major contributors in helping to make the Stockton & Darlington Railway a spectacular visitor attraction with a long-term future.”
This honour is a testament to Richie’s dedication, passion and leadership - and to the incredible collaborative effort behind such a landmark moment in railway history.
Congratulations, Richie. We’re all incredibly proud of Richie and this remarkable achievement is a well-deserved recognition of his dedication, passion and hard work.
If you see Richie on your next visit to Hopetown, give him a big well done.
