Work Experience

Do you want to know what it's like working for an award-winning visitor attraction?

Well this is your chance to jump on board!

Before you begin, please be aware that the demand for work experience at Hopetown Darlington is rather big, so not every student will be lucky enough to take part. But don't let that put you off, every application is considered and we'd love for you to apply.

Year 10 and Year 12 students can apply to do a two day work placement at Hopetown Darlington during their school’s work placement week in May or June.

Come and find out first hand how our visitor attraction works for heritage audiences, families, rail enthusiasts and as a business. Talk to staff about their roles and experiences and get involved in teamwork with us.

There will be a maximum of two students per week – this will depend on staff time and workload.

Tasks may include:

  • Shadowing the Learning and Access Officer working with school groups
  • Shadowing the Welcome team working with visitors in public areas
  • Shadowing the Marketing and Communications Officer and helping with related tasks
  • Shadowing the Collections Engagement Manager and working with museum objects
  • Shadowing the Systems Administrator working with ticketing, technology and systems

You will not:

  • Handle cash or card transactions
  • Work with food and beverages
  • Work with our housekeeping or maintenance teams

We do not have an engineering workshop. If you wish to work with locomotives please contact The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust or Locomotion in Shildon.
