A historic railway building brought back to life
The 1861 Shed (sometimes known as North Road Locomotive Works) used to be a wagon repair shop and housed railway carriages throughout the 19th century.
After sitting empty for over 30 years, it has been brought back into use as the new shared home for the Darlington Railway Preservation Society and the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group.
Visits to the 1861 Shed
On the first Saturday of every month, the 1861 Shed is open to the public. You can visit anytime between 10am-3pm and there is free parking on site. The address is:
1861 Shed
Whessoe Road
Darlington
DL3 0QT
There is limited car parking and the entranced door is in the far corner on the left at the end of the marked ‘car parking spaces'.
You can also combine your visit with a visit to Darlington Locomotive Workshop visits on the same day. If you wish to visit both, please meet in the Viewing Gallery of Darlington Locomotive Works (access is from within the Hopetown Darlington site) at 11am or 1pm to join in!
These visits are free of charge.
The 1861 Shed is also open for special event days.
