1861 Shed

A historic railway building brought back to life

The 1861 Shed (sometimes known as North Road Locomotive Works) used to be a wagon repair shop and housed railway carriages throughout the 19th century.

After sitting empty for over 30 years, it has been brought back into use as the new shared home for the Darlington Railway Preservation Society (DRPS) and the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG).

Visits to the 1861 Shed

The 1861 Shed opens to the public on the first full weekend of every month on our new-look Heritage Weekends. Access is from within Hopetown Darlington.

Find out all you need to know about the Heritage Weekends.

Darlington Locomotive Works also opens to the public on the same weekends.

During your visit you can expect:

  • to get up close to locomotives such as the British Rail J27 (under restoration)
  • receive updates from DRPS and NELPG on their projects
  • discover what goes into restoring locomotives and preserving old railway infrastructure and artefacts
  • to catch up with dedicated volunteers and enthusiasts

Visits are free of charge but donations are welcome.
