Hopetown Darlington is a modern, award‑winning visitor attraction owned and operated by Darlington Borough Council since opening in July 2024. In under two years, it has welcomed over 310,000 visitors to its 7.5‑acre site, establishing itself as a major cultural and family destination in the North East. The attraction is designed to appeal to families, railway enthusiasts and history lovers, with a diverse audience profile spanning local residents, day visitors and heritage tourists. Key milestones in its development include its official opening, its central role in the S&DR200 festival celebrations, a Royal Visit, the launch of Experiment! the North East’s only permanent immersive experience ride, and the introduction of steam train rides on the UK’s newest heritage railway line. Hopetown employs around 15 full‑time staff and approximately 50 team members overall, supporting a wide-ranging offer that blends heritage, learning and entertainment.
